What length of ramp do I require?

Length of ramp = Chosen Gradient x Height (Change in level)

1. Select a gradient appropriate to the situation
2. Measure the Height to be overcome
3. Multiply the chosen Gradient by the Height to calculate the minimum length of ramp required.

Example:

Chosen gradient = 1:10

Height = 150mm (6”)

Length required = 10 x 150mm (6”) = 1500mm (60”)

Choose a ramp with a minimum length of 1500mm (60”)

Remember – Consider the available space and choose the longest ramp possible as this achieves a shallower gradient and is easier to climb.

What gradient will I achieve with a specific ramp?

Gradient = Length of ramp DIVIDED BY Height (Change in level)

1. Select the specific ramp to be used
2. Measure the Height to be overcome
3. Simply divide the Length of the chosen ramp by the Height to calculate the Gradient that will be achieved.

Example:

Length of chosen ramp = 1800mm (72”) DEVIDED BY Height = 300mm (12”)

Gradient = 1800mm (72”)
300mm (12”)

= 6 (1:6 gradient)

Check the achieved gradient against the Gradient Guide to be sure that it is appropriate for the intended use.
