Scooters are divided into 4 main categories; small, medium, large and class 3.
Small - Is usually designed for ease of transporting in a car and have a limited range.
Medium - Is designed more for everyday use and normally have a range of between 15-20miles. Some do dismantle to go in a car.
Large - Due to their size lend themselves towards the taller or heavier weight user and have bigger batteries so tend to go further and normally have a maximum speed of 8mph and sometimes referred to as Class 3 scooters.
Of the many different makes & models of the scooters we have stocked over the years by far the most popular and economically price is still the Shoprider Sovereign. Although the look of the scooter looks a little dated. Its design and features are the benchmark on which most of the more modern design scooters are based.
The Sovereign has a maximum speed of 4mph and an approximate range of 20miles. Although not fitted with suspension the 10" pneumatic wheels and nicely padded seat give a smooth comfortable ride.
The Sovereign can be easily dismantled without tools for transportation however some of the more up to date scooters do dismantle far more easily and are much lighter.
The majority of all scooters nowadays are fitted which direct drive sealed transmission/gearbox for efficiency.
All are fitted with an electro magnetic brake for maximum safety, this operates automatically when thumb/hand levers are released. Some scooters are also fitted with an emergency hand brake. All are fitted with a freewheeling device/lever which enables the scooter to be pushed if necessary.
Most scooters (other than some of the very small ones) have an adjustable tiller and a locking swivelling seat with lift up/detachable arms.
The controls are all very similar. All have a key or an on – off switch , a gauge to show the condition/charge of the batteries, and they have an adjustable speed control knob to increase/decrease the speed. Some have switches to operate lights and indicators and usually a horn.
To operate the scooter there are 2 levers that are either pushed (usually with the thumbs), or pulled with your fingers, one makes the scooter go forward, the other backwards a soon as you push/pull one of the levers it releases the automatic electromagnetic brake and the scooter starts as soon as you release the lever the brake activates the and scooter stops.
